Let me also say a word about forms of address.

Very early in my career, I used to have an extremely hard time writing emails, because I didn't know how to address people. I would sit there for ages staring at the first line of every email draft trying to decide what to call somebody.

In case you have that problem, let me be explicit. If you are sending me professional correspondence, please either call me "Samuel" or "Dr. Baltz". I will be equally happy with either of those forms of address, and I like them both more than any other way of being addressed.

Please don't take this as a general rule that applies to anyone else. It's worth asking explicitly before you call someone by their first name instead of a professional form of address. For me personally, though, it is always perfectly fine to call me Samuel, no matter who you are or why you're talking to me.
